"I've said it time after time and I'll say it again. Palahniuk is to alternative ficion what John Grisham is for the legal thriller. With that said, I eat him with a straw every time.
This is the one everyone told me to read and it did not disappoint in the sense that it was utterly "Palahniukian." Terse sentences, fragmented and promising grittiness. End it with a nice twist which if you think about, is probably dumb, so try not to think about it too hard.
I'm still however, trying to figure out why everyone liked this one so much. The topics are humdrum and unlike the anti-hero in Fight Club, this protagonist is trying a little too hard to hate the world. We get it, you're a monster, but even emo kids eat ice cream sometimes...
"Invisible Monsters" to me, was another side of the coin of "Lullaby." Like "Lullaby," the book is moving, a road book that jumps back and forth through time. And if Palahniuk's devices don't wear on you (if they are, you're thinking too hard), then it's fun, like a wooden rollercoaster. The headaches will go away as long as you just keep downing the cotton candy.
"Invisible Monsters" would be part of the Palahniuk reader, since "Lullaby" fails to be as popular. Symptomatically Palahniuk, but would we want to read it if it weren't?"

Invisible Monsters is a book that is not about the plot, it is about the characters, and yet there are twists upon twists upon twists every turn of the page. Who is Brandy Alexander? Who is Shannon McFarland? Who is Seth Thomas? And who is Evie Cottrell? You'll just have to keep reading. Like me, you will probably wind out not caring about any of them, but they are going to make you laugh out loud with their outrageous plans and antics.
You'll have tears running down your face when Shannon's parents (in a flashback scene before her disfigurement) give her nothing but condoms for Christmas because her brother died of AIDS. And the conversation around the Thanksgiving table turns to graphic depictions of hinder romping while they cower in unnecessary fear because they support AIDS families. Be thankful these are not your parents.
Told oddly in a profusion of scene jumping, using the written word like flash photography, Palahniuk has written a psychotically offbeat tale that nonetheless will have you turning pages as rapidly as Brandy pops vicodin and estrogen. I found it strangely enjoyable and morbidly compelling, and if you like screwy and disgusting stories, you will most likely love Invisible Monsters. Enjoy!"
"Wow. That is all I find myself saying, and have been saying for the past 5 minutes, for I have just finished the book, "Invisible Monsters". This was one HELL of a book, and if you want shocks, twists, and turns, this is the holy grail of books. There are a total of 5 main plot twists that will really surprise you. But I warn you, if you do read it, it is also a very disturbing book, but it also teaches a lot of lessons in life and how sometimes, you have to do wrong to make it right again. My favorite experience from reading this was probably when I was reading the ending while listening to music and at the moment that Brandy got shot and "Time to Dance" by Panic! started to play, it was freaking awesome.
Overall favorite moment: When Brandy (Shane) tells that he actually put the can in the fire, because he was tired of being a normal kid, and how he became a girl because everything else in the world was either too trendy, or too vague.
Favorite chapter: The Big Finish:Chapter 27-32 (Discover that Evie used to be a man, Brandy gets shot, Shannon tells Brandy her life story, burn the place down, wedding reception to name a few parts)"
"I had really wanted to read something of Chuck Palahniuk's. I had never read any of his novels, and did not want to read Fight Club because I felt it would be too "pop" of an introduction to his work. Consequentially, my fiance bought me this novel. I have to say, I really really like the author's style. The story is dark and gory and brutal, but the writing style is humorous rather than vulgar, and the subject matter is treated with a black comedy feel. I got the impression from reading this book that the author does EXTENSIVE research to lend his worlds as much realism as possible, and delves deeply into them to ensure their believability. Because I read a ton of Haruki Murakami's novels before even checking out Chuck Palahniuk, I must compare him to Murakami-san, one of my favorite authors. He is like a darker, less-horror-more-humor, American post-modern version. The twist at the end of this novel was great; I never saw it coming, and it left me blinking in my chair for a while with a big "what the hell just happened" grin on my face. I love when books do that."
