About this title: A vampire named Louis tells his life story to a young reporter. While initial reviews of this book were unfavorable, it has nevertheless become something of a contemporary classic in neo-Gothic literature.
Note: This is a general synopsis. Each listing is described below.
"This book will absolutely suck you in and you'll never want to put it down (except to read the other books in the series). Anne Rice's amazing use of detail paints a perfect picture in your mind and its like your actually there. You'll fall in love with the handsome vampire Louis as he tells his "life" story to a young, at first unbelieveing reporter. You'll also meet many other interesting characters such as my favorite Lestat (whom you may not like at first but keep reading the books and loving him is inevitable) and the child vampire Claudia. I promis you, you wont regret buying this book, and odds are you'll read it more than once!"
"Anne Rice spins such an intricate story in this book. You are quickly sucked into Louis' world and the thought of leaving it is almost unbearable. There are some points where Anne goes into so much detail that it becomes a little bit of a dry read, but those details are essential to this intricate story. I fell in love with Louis and felt so sorry for him. I fell in love with Lestat, yet hated him so much. I would have to say this is my absolute favorite book. I have read it dozens of times and can't wait to read it again."
Publishers Weekly "I got to the point where the vampire began describing his brother's death, and the whole thing just exploded! Suddenly, in the guise of Louis, a fantasy figure, I was able to touch the reality that was mine. It had something to do with growing up in New Orleans, this strange, decadent city full of antebellum houses. It had something to do with my old-guard Catholic background. It had something to do with the tragic loss of my daughter and with the death of my mother when I was fourteen. Through Louis' eyes, everything became accessible. But I didn't ask when I was writing what it meant; I only asked if it felt authentic. There was an intensity--an intensity that's still there when I write about those characters. As long as it is there, I will go on with them. In some way they are a perfect metaphor for me." -- Anne Rice
New York Times Book Review "Rice exploits all the sexual elements in [the vampire legend] with a firm self-consciousness of their meaning." -- Leo Braudy
Voice Literary Supplement "...[I]t would have been a notable tour de force even if its characters had been human....Rice's most effective accomplishment, though, was to link up sex and fear again." -- Walter Kendrick
