"After really hating The Poet, I was nervous to return to Connelly. Turns out I shouldn't've worried. Connelly is still the master of the police procedural, and Bosch is still a fascinating character. This one features the typical-to-the-series conflict between Bosch's investigation and his own department. Sadly, loses one star for extraneous pedophilia. In the future, I think I'm just going to skip his non-Bosch books."
"An excellent Harry Bosch with the usual Connolly twists and turns --- all believable. Bosch is persistent, brilliant, and sometimes rash/wrongheaded - a good combination in a character who works for the LA police. The mystery focuses on who killed an African-American lawyer who has been a thorn in the side of the LA police and who is currently about to prosecute several policemen. The journey leads Harry to a dominatrix and an earlier murder --- that of a child. Secondary characters are vivid."
"Michael Connelly is among my favorite writers, but Angels Flight is not one of his better works.
Angels Flight follows the efforts of L.A> Detective Harry Bosch as he leads a desperate effort to solve the exceptionally brutal murder of a Johnnie Cochran-like civil rights attorney.
The novel takes place a few years after the O.J. trial and all of Los Angeles is primed and ready to go up like kindling. The story has all the right characters, the dirty cops, the Sharpton-style reverend, the racists on both sides of the color divide, and the careless media.
Maybe one of the problems with this novel is it seems too ready made and too by the numbers. The mystery becomes a second concern as the novel delves into race relations and the problems with unbridled media.
As always, Connelly is a great writer who knows his topic, his characters, and his setting. He tells his story well. This is not my favorite Connelly, but Connelly remains a solid favorite."
"Fast-paced, entertaining mystery, lots of twists. I enjoyed the book even though I don't usually read police mysteries. I would have liked a different ending; however, fans of Bosch/Connelly/cop mysteries will no doubt dig it more than I did."
