"This book was a great hit, when Nevil Shute was at the height of popularity as an author. It's a wonderful adventure story set in Australia and in England. There's a supernatural element, as well - it's curious to see how Nevil Shute, writing in 1953, thought the world would have changed by 1980."
"This alternative version of the British Commonwealth circa 1980 was published in 1953. The primary discussion topic is electoral reform, but I swear it is not so dull as it sounds. The argument Shute makes, by virtue of these alternatives long and successfully in place in this alternate Australia is especially interesting in the election climate of the US -my home- at this time."
"I always enjoy this author. This book confused me because it was referring to things that happened in the 70's. I knew the author died in 1960 and that the original version of this was published in 1958, so I kept wondering if subsequent editions has been edited. As soon as I finished, there was a note from the author about "projecting 30 years into the future" with this novel he and explains why he did that. It would have clarified much for me if I had found that note at the beginning of the read instead of at the end. Still, I found it an interesting and worthwhile read."
"I'm really disappointed by this one. I'm a huge Shute fan, but this book was akward and not set-up well (I didn't realize that I was in the future until 1/2 way through the book, which probably was obvious to anyone who knows both Australian and English government, but I clearly do not). The beginning and the end were the most interesting parts. Characters (which he usually excells at) suck (with the exception of the "present day" characters). A big ol' disappointment."
