"I can't believe I never got around to this book- not through my years of childhood, library school or library work- until now. So, my son and I read it together. Of course he laughed at the bare bottom (didn't so much notice/care about the full frontal), but he just laughed hysterically when the boy's batter outfit melted off in the milk. A fun read, so not worth the brouhaha over one little boys parts!"
"Illustration is art. In this absurd, but completely convincing story, Sendak brings to life all the images of movies and comics from the forties. His wit is visual, and most engaging for being set against a dark cartoon background in which shimmers between cityscape and the contents of your fridge."
"A young boy explores the kitchen. He is very imaginary, and uses many descriptive words to describe his dream world. He dreams he is flying through the kitchen in his very own plane. He had adventures as he explores.
I like this book because it should the imagination of a child. I would use this book to show the kids how to explore their imagination. I would use this in a thematic unit about imagination and dramatic play."
"This book has made the banned book list more than once. Personally I think the objection is totally prudish. Concerns are that the main character loses his pajamas and is naked throughout most of the story. The nude character, reminded me of cherubs in renaissance art."
