About this title: Fourteen-year-old Alanna of Trebound, now Prince Jonathan's squire, masquerades as a boy, Alan, until she gets her long dreamt of knighthood at the age of 18. The path leading up to her Ordeal, a knight's rite of passage, is littered with a host of difficulties. Not only must Alanna contend with her confusing feelings of love for the prince, she must somehow combat the wicked machinations of her arch nemesis, Duke Roger, an evil sorcerer bent on the destruction of the royal family. This is the second book in the arresting Song of the Lioness series by bestselling author Tamora Pierce.

"As with the first book in this series I have mixed feelings about it. Overall I was interested in the story and charcters. I felt the writing was better in this book than the first. I have some issues with it though, it is written for young readers but it treats things like sex and drinking very casually. I find that to be irresponsible of the writer. I would not suggest that a young person read this book for that reason, yet the writing isn't really sophisticated anough for an adult so I have a problem with it. I had wished that I had read it before my daughter did had I known that teenagers were having sex in this book I would not have let my daughter read it! It's not dirty and not detailed but it still sends the wrong message! As for the story, I like it, it was better developed in this book than the firts, it may be that the combination of the two together made it seem more complete to me this time."
"Enjoyed the book but I'm seeing a lot of things I don't like about this series. Tamora Pierce seems to gloss over a lot that in my opinion shouldn't be glossed over. The death of her father is a 'oh yeah, last month dad died' blip on the map. While he was a rather neglectful parent, I feel more could have come from this than a 'I almost forgot' mentioning. The death of a neglectful parent would still bring out some sort of emotions in a girl, even if just a 'I wish he had payed more attention to me before he died', something! And later something similar happens when she glosses over the second kiss with the prince. All this 'oh god is he going to kiss me again' just to get a 'oh yeah, he did, no big'. I didn't see as much of this sort of thing in the protector of the small series, so I look forward to the writing getting better as I continue with this series and the next."
"Excellent sequel to the first one. Alanna is such an interesting character, I love how strong and dedicated she is. Having read the Tortall books in the wrong order, I was VERY surprised to see that Alanna and John are together! I know they don't end up together, so I'm now very curious to know how she ends up with George in the end and not John. And where does Thayet come from?
I just love Alanna. Her character is just so true, but not without faults. I also love the addition of Faithful. He's a funny little thing.
"It's kind of impossible for me to describe the impact Alanna had on me as a young girl. She taught me that people will most often find your paralysing rage "cute" rather than intimidating, and she sparked a lifelong desire to have a talking cat with purple eyes. I generally consider the Immortals quartet as my favourite but Alanna definitely had the most impact on me. I re-read either this or the Immortals probably once a year and if I ever have a daughter this will be required reading...more It's kind of impossible for me to describe the impact Alanna had on me as a young girl.
