"Alternate history from a well-known practitioner of the art. In this case, aliens arrive at Earth in the middle of WWII, causing the warring nations to unite in defending Earth. Mr. Turtledove uses this premise to explore the obvious moral dilemmas which arise from this scenario, but the whole thing is pretty two dimensional and not particularly well-written. I like my alternate history without the deus ex machina; the aliens didn't do a thing for me. There are three more books in this cycle, but I'm not sure I'm up to it."
"The eight books in this series provide science fiction lovers with an entire history of what if. This is not for the faint of heart. To reach the final, and best book of the series, you need to read through 3500 pages of worldwar. I read them all in sequence, without a break, and will do so again one of these days. The story is fantastic however the writing was not quite up to the standard of Arthur C. Clarke, or Isaac Asimov."
"I was hooked on Page 1. A great book, great author and great series. Alternate history at it's best. Aliens with early 21st century technology against World War Two era earth. What a concept. Turtledoves weaves a rich, deep, detailed story thru a ensemble cast."
"The best alternate reality/history book series I've ever read. The blending of fact & fiction is seemless. His writing style is very enjoyable, & the detail that he used to create the invaders that call themselves "The Race" is awe inspiring. Anybody who enjoys history (WWII) & sci-fi (alien invaders) will love this series."
