About this title: Truman Capote's masterpiece, IN COLD BLOOD, a sterling early example of the New Journalism, was part of an evolving genre that filtered events both big and small through the writer's own experiences and feelings. IN COLD BLOOD is the intensely researched story of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, and the two men who brutally murdered them on a November night in 1959 for 40 dollars and a radio. Capote spent six years working on the book; his research included not only long stays in Kansas but a sympathetic relationship with Perry Smith, one of the killers. The result, which Capote termed ...

"What an amazing author of incredibly sharp character studies. Truman Capote's portrayal of the murder victims, the murderers, and the detectives was equally impartial. In fact, I think the descriptions of the motivations of criminals in this book were more sympathetic and detailed than those of the upright hard-working farmer who was killed and the detective who had nightmares and smoked 60 cigarettes a day until the killers were caught. Yet, at the end of a scrupulously detailed account of the thoughts and feelings of two murderers, do we understand any more how something happened where a respected family of four could be killed for $40.00 with absolutely no feelings of guilt? Can we possibly get into that mindset? It was a very well done account, but I'll stick with my favorite British detective fiction of the 1930's and 40's, where even if a character is driven to the desparation of suicide, a polite curtain is drawn across the motivations. I'm definitely not a voyeur of the type who has to see every sweat drop and every cause of a breaking heart. Even though Capote is skilled, I won't seek out his writings again."
"The book i have read is titled In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. It's about two Murderer's and their case. This book is a Novel and it talks about how two men murder a family at their own home and flee to Mexico to hide and lay-low.
On the morning of November 14, 1959 Perry Smith meets up with Dick Hickock. While the Clutters go about their daily business, running errands and baking apple pies, Hickock and Smith are tuning their car and plotting on them. After a long drive and deep thoughts, Perry and Dick pull up to the Clutter home with a shotgun and knife in hand. That morning, the bodies are discovered without no trace of who, what, and how they did it. A man in jail who knew Perry and dick was sure and had an idea that they had either something to do with it or that they did it. He shared his thoughts with authorities and confessed. Dick and Perry was sentenced to Death-row.
I find this book interesting because it's filled with Drama and suspense. I also believe this book is well explained because it shows how a person would really think after they've committed a murder. My favorite scene in the book is when Perry and Dick was cought by a policewoman because she notices the license plate on the stolen vehicle. This book affects me greatly because it shows how much a uncivilized childhood can have so much affection on a persons adulthood.
I would recommend this book to adults that have had a not so Great youth in their past. This book would be a great book to read independently because it captures ones mind and hooks u to read some more. I have read a book like this titled Makes Me Wanna Holler by Nathan McCall, two of the main characters have disorderly childhoods. This book relates to people who make bad choices and take risks."
"I originally thought this book would be a page turner on hypothermia. Being that thermoregulation keeps human blood at about 100 degrees, and hypothermia sets in at the high 90's, I assumed "cold" blood would be around 60 degrees...meaning instant death.
However, I did completely misjudge the book and its subject. Well played, Mr. Capote...well played."
"As a fan of true crime books I was eager to read this one. Always curious about murders and the stories behind them I had high hopes for this. Not only did Capote forge a bond with the murderers but he was a respected author. I was hoping for a gripping story instead of the typical trashy pulp that most true crime stories are. Instead what I got was a dull story that left me so uninterested and unconnected to the men who committed the crimes and the victims I could only read this halfway. I gave it my best but gave up. Still so much tragedy and for what? Capote does dig deep into the convicted men's backgrounds for some sympathy but I just had none to give. I know that others out there will love this, this just wasn't the book for me."
