"picked this one up recently on recommendation from Good friend and Goodreader Di - I know its no.10 in series but ...- if this is enjoyable then I'll start from no.1!
Yes - good recommendation Di thanks! - I really really enjoyed this once I'd got into it. I loved the setting - the dales/moors/countryside and this particular story brought in details of life in WW11 amongst the ordinary folk at home which was nostalgic (not that was around at the time!!) - by the end of the book I felt I was getting to know Banks a little more and was so desperate to read another and only having one to hand ended up reading another out of sequence....."
"So far, this is my favourite Inspector Banks novel.
A skeleton is found in the ruins of an abandoned village that is normally covered by a reservoir, but in this dry season, many unnexpected discoveries come to light.
This story is told from two points of view - that of an elderly former resident of the abandoned village, through her journal, and of course from the point of view of Inspector Banks.
As is usual, Banks grows as a character throughout the novel, a slow steady progression that rewards readers of each successive book in the series. This is where he meets Annie Cabot, in interesting character in herself.
The story told from the journal is from the war, 1939 to about 1945 and is as interesting a story in it's own right as the plot of this novel. Of course, the two are entertwined.
"Started it on Monday afternoon and finished it on Friday. It's British so the English language is a bit different. It is a good read and can be fast paced."
