"prix nobel de littérature 1938 première femme à l'obtenir ! *
"This is an interesting read. I found the historical information enlightening, though of course much of it is hugely fictionalized. Buck makes the Empress, Tzu Hsi, a more sympathetic character than I think is deserved. The story of her forbidden love is compelling and is the main thing that serves to humanize this backward thinking, selfish, power-mad ruler. Of course, the love story is probably almost completely fictional, though I did some research, and it seems the real life counterpart to the love interest in the book did, at least, work to save her life in a treaty and also warned her of a conspiracy to imprison her. Still, though I have to take the love story as fictional, I found it achingly beautiful, but I was disappointed with it at one point. Anyway, one must respect Tzu Hsi in the book and in reality for managing to grab and hold such power in a world where women were second class (like really, really second class). I have always argued that our world would be so much more peaceful if women held the positions of political power, but what I know of Tzu Hsi challenges my assertion; however, she was a woman swimming in a sea of men, so that's some excuse. Based on what I learned in the book and on Wikipedia, I surmise that Tzu Hsi was one lousy ruler, though charismatic and good at keeping power in her own hands. Learn something about Chinese history, but remember this book is largely fiction, and enjoy it for the story and the strong characters. (In many ways, I despise Tzu Hsi, but she's a good character, kinda like Scarlett O'Hara. I very much liked the character of the love interest, despite him disappointing me at one point.)"
