"Tampa is an interesting setting for a work of immigration history, as cities in the South are usually not settings for these kinds of studies. However, Tampa saw heavy immigration from Italy, Cuba and Spain due to its burgeoning cigar industry. While the standard interpretation for the immigration experience centers around Americanization or the lack thereof, this book finds that these three immigrant groups combined to form a "Latin" culture which centered around mutual aid societies, labor conflict, and an anarcho-syndicalist ideology."
