About this title: Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park has honored the legacy of the vanished Anasazi civilization by its well-preserved cliff dwellings, where park ranger Anna Pigeon, separated from family and friends, finds solace in the quiet ruins. But the rugged beauty of the park is suddenly overshadowed when a fellow ranger is found dead, curled up in one of the ancient kivas with his hat and shoes by his side. Immersing herself in the investigation, Anna sorts through her shifting loyalties and struggles to honor the past as she faces forces, both seen and unseen, that threaten her career, and her very ...

"Anna Pigeon is a Park Service Ranger and each mystery takes place in a different National Park. The main character is strong in some respects and yet has some problems. The setting, plot and characters appealed to me"
"Nevada Barr takes the reader from National Park to National Park in the Anna Pigeon series. If I plan to visit a specific Park, I look to see if Barr has a book featuring that setting to read before I go. Her descriptive scenes are accurate and breathtaking. The main character, Anna Pigeon, is a balance of positive and negative traits. She is brave and resilliant, yet struggles with alcoholism. Within the meandering plot of Ill Wind there are some wonderful humorous dialogue, very clever, wry and funny. Frederick Spalding is a delightful personality, about as far from your average FBI agent as you can get. A feel-good, satisfying read."
"I didn't care for this book as much as the other two Anna Pigeon books I've read. It had a much slower beginning and more than a couple annoying characters. I started really getting into the story about halfway through - once everything had picked up."
"Enjoyed this Anna Pigeon mystery set in Mesa Verde. We visited there some years back about six weeks after extensive wildfires there which had brought firefighters from all over. Already, new shoots were appearing.
MV is a World Heritage Site and very interesting to visit. We were fortunate to have an airplane ride over the site by the owner of the motel where we were staying. (We were writing up the story for PRIVATE PILOT magazine.)
We love the southwest. (I'm sort of off topic here, aren't I?)"
