About this title: Elli Friedmann was 13 when the Nazis invaded the town in Hungary where she lived. At first Elli and her mother were forced to relocate to a crowded ghetto, but eventually they were transported to Auschwitz. Because of her blond hair, Elli was spared from death and selected as a worker. In this memoir, she describes life in the infamous concentration camp, what it was like to be one of the camp's few teenage prisoners, and how she and her mother depended on their courage and love for each other to stay alive.

"I read this book in middle school and it was one of the first books I couldn't put down. I love reading about the Holocaust and what happened and this was a different story than Anne Frank, which is the story that most people know"
"Thirteen-year-old Elli describes the cruelty and horror that is the Nazi invasion of Hungary. As she and her family persevere, their hope and love give them the strength to survive.
I would possibly use this book as a read aloud in my classroom during my WWII lit circle unit."
"This book really opened my eyes to the horrors of the Holocaust. It is a true story about 13 year Livia Bitton-Jackson's experiences during WWII. When war breaks out Bitton-Jackson, her family and all the other Jews in her small Hungarian village are sent away to mysterious camps. For the next four years of her life we follow Livia's journey through Aushwitz, Dachau, labor camps, and finally, freedom."
"I was assigned to read this for my English class. I think that it is well written, but I would probably never choose to read this book. It is too horrifying for me. Much of the story takes place in concentration camps, and it is far from pleasant.
My English teacher was always telling us things like "Do these kind of things still go on in the world today? Yes. Will we ever let them happen again? It's important to know the truth...etc.". Even so, I tend to like to read books that don't send my thoughts into the depths of horrible darkness."
