"Because I'm the type to judge a book by its cover, I would never have picked this one up had the author not been mentioned so often and so fondly in many of the other books I've been reading.
It seems like every sex book I come across wants to reassure me about something (Sex Toys 101 wants to allay my fears that a vibrator might electrocute or desensitize me, make me an addict, or replace human companionship; The Big Bang wants me to know that fisting won't make me "physically or morally loose" and that an interest in BDSM doesn't mean I am the victim of a childhood trauma) but this book is a wetter blanket by far. Where is the joy, reverence, enthusiasm? Why is everything about anxiety?
I suppose the day will come when She Comes First seems this retro, but How to Be a Great Lover has not aged well, which given its content is a good thing. It had never occurred to me to fear that becoming sexually knowledgeable could make me "bad." I wouldn't have thought that if my new expertise raises my next boyfriend's eyebrows, I can always just show him the book, thus reassuring him that I did not learn this through experience.
If they ever update the social context of the book, they might as well adjust the arrangement of the how-to sections as well. By way of example, the steps and illustrations for the hand job "Ode to Bryan" should be placed together so that when the book is lying open all the information can be seen without having to turn the page. Instead, Ode to Bryan starts in the middle of a page, goes on for a full page, and then another half page after that. The illustrations are not only not next to their corresponding steps (the illustration for step 3 is next to step 1), they aren't even on the same page as their instructions (illustration for step 6 is on page 105 while its text is on page 106). The editing in this regard could have been better."
