About this title: Clarice Lispector died of cancer at the age of fifty-six on 9th December 1977. "The Hour of the Star" was published that same year and acclaimed by the critics as 'a regional allegory' of extraordinary awareness and insight. Lispector herself defined "The Hour of the Star" as a book 'made without words...a mute photograph...a silence...a question'. The tale of Macabea can be read at different levels and lends itself to various interpretations. The book's subtle interplay of fiction and philosophy sums up Lispector's unique talent as a writer and her lasting influence on contemporary Brazilian ...

"Interesting Brazilian read. I like the way she interposes her narrator with the bare-bones narrative itself. She dismantles a few notions about poverty and class in the process. A quick and introspective read."
"This book was assigned for a class on contemporary culture (focusing mostly on Brazil & Japan), but I didn't read it. I picked it up the other day and read all the way through in one day on buses as I ran errands across the city, eventually I had to stop and sit at a cafe to finish it."
"Wow, couldn't put this book down for the whole week, it was really a fascinating company; commuting hopelessly into the city, jostled and cramped inside the tube...
A very thin volume, wouldn't be very long to reach the last page, but...Lispector created a truly haunting universe here. Short sentences, abrupt interruptions, though bordering on affected mannerisms still convey that senseless despair of being, especially since the masculine storyteller - a creation of the female author - often infiltrates the narrative, giving us unique glimpses on the struggle between him and his characters..."
