"One of Doyle's better known Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles, is one that begins in benign city drudgery and ends in the sensational, sensual moors of the countryside. A family history, plagued by the evil tale of a spiritual being, imposes itself on the pragmatic and scientific modernity of Holmes and Watson's practice, throwing them for a ghostly loop.
When I was in third grade, I "read" the Hound of the Baskervilles. I had been given a collection of Doyle's Holmes stories by some well-intentioned relative and being the avid little reader that I was, dug in. I remember very few of the the other stories but because I was, even (or especially) at 9, an avid animal advocate, I remember the The Hound.
At least I thought I did. When I am distressed about the things my son (currently 19 months) is reading in seven and a half years, I'll have to remind myself that The Hound stuck with me in little part regarding the plot. The tawdry implied love affairs and inherent violence had no effect on me at that age. I think I read it simply because of the dog.
Of course, as a 26 year old, Watson's recount of the countryside drama, packed with supernatural intrigue, holds much more weight. There are great writers still working today and they'll certainly do in a pinch but there is nothing quite like the witty one liners and beautiful mysterious prose of Dolye's stories. Through and through its tiny entirety, the Hound of the Baskerville is fantastic craftsmanship and an inevitable crowd favorite."
"In many ways I cannot believe that I have failed to actually read this book until now. I know as a young kid I watched episodes of Wishbone and this story was one of the books featured.
In reading this book I came to appreciate the beauty of Doyle's writing. First the idea that it was written entirely in the perspective of Sherlock Holmes "dear" friend Dr. Watson, brings a certain twist and interaction to the front. Because of this, we have Watson as he related to Holmes and we have the thoughts of Holmes as he speaks them only. Never are we allowed to know the inner thinking of Holmes and his brilliant mind said by Dr. Mortimer to the "second" best mind in the world.
With the writing style aside, the plot and themes make for a timeless mystery classic. Whether it is the realization of someone following Sir Henry by looking at the reflection of a store window or the discovery of a young boy making his way across the moor through the view of a telescope the story keeps the attention of the reader in a most remarkable way.
Add in the different personalities of all the characters living upon the dismal, godforsaken moor just add to the delight and intrigue of the reader.
The last chapter and the revealing of Holmes, thought-process still makes for an interesting and powerful reminder of all that went on."
"In preparation for Pierre Bayard's Sherlock Holmes Was Wrong I returned to my childhood favorite reading. Granted, the Hound has never been my favorite Holmes story, but I found it to be a fun, exciting, and an interesting read. The story is steeped in the gothic tradition with the large estate, deadly moor, oppressive fog, and desolate landscape. Doyle succeeds in creating a character out of the landscape in a way that Willa Cather's does (and you try fitting those two in the senetence.) The ending still tends to just fizzle out, but the steps in getting to the end are worth the effort. Most people know the story in one way or another (my oldest said he remembers it best as a Wishbone episode -- for fans of the literary dog), but just in case: Holmes is called in when a member of the Baskerville family dies. Although it appears a simple heart attack, a doctor and friend of Baskerville thinks he was frightened to death by a giant hound which has haunted the family as a curse. With a new heir arriving can Holmes solve the mystery of the hound before the next (and last) member of the Baskerville family dies? Watson plays a major role in this book in part because some scholars assert the novel was originally written without Holmes -- this was written after Doyle killed Holmes off and before he returned him in "The Empty House." When the publisherr offered double the royalties, Holmes was inserted. Doyle even throws in an insane murderer haunting the moor to throw everyone off track and there are is no shortage of clues to build a case upon. But I leave the ending to you."
