"It took me five months to get through this book. I have had multiple books going all year, and in trying to balance reading them all, and just flat-out not-having-much-time-for-reading, it took a long time to get through this one.
My mom read this series aloud to us, or so I'm told, when we were little, but I didn't remember any but the last two. I would have to say these rank right up there with "Carry On Mr. Bowditch" as far as really excellent biographies go. These are actually the author's own story (so I guess that makes it an "autobiography," eh?), told in a series of eight books. In the first book he's a little boy, and by the end of the series he's twenty-something.
Disclaimer: My one issue with the books is the "bad language" found throughout the series. Now that I think about it, I don't think "The Home Ranch" had a problem with that, but I know the first one or two, and several of the later ones, do. Nothing a black Sharpie can't fix though. (:
If you're wondering what the series is about.... The first book brings the Moody family from the East to a ranch in Colorado, due to Mr. Moody's bad health (I think he had tuberculosis), the first book chronicles their efforts to make their ranch support them, and Ralph's antics in trying to be a real man and help earn the income.
As the series continues, the family becomes fatherless, moves to the nearest town in CO, and tries to make ends meet there. They run a washing business, baking business, etc., and Ralph starts really raking in the bucks (enough to buy a milk cow) by riding in matched races at the local rodeo (without mother's knowledge or permission). Then he takes a summer job at a cattle ranch, as told in the book I'm currently reviewing. (:
Eventually, the family is forced to move back East, but city life doesn't set too well with Ralph and he eventually goes to live with his uncles at their ranch, and then from there he becomes kind of a roaming cowpuncher.
Altogether, I liked the strong sense of family loyalty the Moody's share. Their resourcefulness, excellent work ethic, and the way the "children" did everything within their power to help support their family, is also refreshing. I like how Ralph, at the age of nine or ten, is working full-time and sending everything he earns home to his mother... and completely of his own accord.
So, if you're looking for an excellent autobiography, and enjoy true tales of life in the west (not exactly the "old west" but hardly modern, either), you will enjoy these books. The above disclaimer, however, still stands."
"This book is cool because you feel like your living on a Colorado Ranch for the summer right along with Ralph Moody! He even goes on a cattle drive, and runs into some adventure. Good Story."
"I just finished reading this book to the boys (8 and 6). As a read-aloud I really can't say enough about this series. First and foremost, these are true stories, a fact that really seems to resonate with my boys. Second, Ralph Moody lives according to a moral code that is impeccable. Moody or "Little Britches" treasures hard-work, honesty, integrity, and goodness. And finally, these stories are just plain fun to read. It is easy to become absorbed in the childhood of Little Britches. Indeed it is a way of life that has long since dissolved in this country, but the need to resurrect the work ethic and values that are evident on every page is sadly evident with one glance at today's headlines. The "Little Britches" series is exceptional, and I enjoy it because the stories are great fun, but I absolutely adore it because of the conversations that it has faccilitated in our house and the emotions we share. The Home Ranch ends with a scene that involves Little Briches and Hazel thanking each other for the summer they have had together. Little Britches explains, "That was the first time I ever wanted to kiss a girl, but I didn't. Hazel whirled away and raced for the house. With my high-heeled boots and chaps on, I couldn't run fast enough to catch her." Seeing the expression on Caden's face as I read that...priceless."
"I loved this book even more than the first one in the series, although it's definitely a 5 start too. Maybe I loved it so much because of my obsessive love of horses when I was growing up, I can relate to many of Ralph's feelings. Ralph is a little older (11 or 12 I think) in this book and takes a summer job earning a man's pay. It's the kind of book you want your kids to read because it's not just a fun, adventurous story, but the underlying moral, what makes a boy a man... a good man, is so well intertwined with Ralph's experiences that the emotional moments hit me by surprise.
