"The team of Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers is perhaps my favorite children's duo out there. The stories are always well written and pleasing to the ear as a read aloud. Susan Jeffers is a wonderful illustrator that provides richness and color to all of her pages. Although this is based upon the book by Rachel Field, it still has a lot of Wells and Jeffers magic."
"Hitty is a doll carved out of lucky mountain-ash wood by a peddler. Her first owner is a young girl named Phoebe Preble. Hitty ends up accompanying Phoebe's family on her father's whaling ship, and that is only the beginning of Hitty's adventures. The concept of the book is cute: a doll telling her life's story, or at least the story of the first hundred years. Unfortunately, this 1930 Newbery Winner loses something with age. The story is charming, but it is easy to get lost in some of the language. There is a recent adaptation of the story (written by Rosemary Wells), but PLCMC does not own it, so I was not able to compare. I liked the book, but would recommend it only to really good readers who will not mind the older language."
"I had completely forgotten about this book until I was searching for "One Hundred Years of Solitude." I absolutely adored this book when I was little and believe it was one of the first books that I remember reading entirely on my own."
"Copyright date: 1929...Odd to think that my mother might have run across this book as a little girl and read it....I remember reading it myself as a little girl. Like many of the older Newbery books, it is a vision into the past, a little trip into life for kids before TV and computers and IPods.
Hitty is a wooden doll made in the early 1800's. Her underpants are embroidered with her name and along the way she becomes the most literate of dolls. One girl after another owns her, though her painted features fade and her various dresses come and go. She has a series of exciting adventures: she lands in a tree, in a shipwrecked, on a deserted island worshipped as an idol (!), on a steamship, under the cushion of an old couch, in an exhibition, and, finally, in an antique store. She manages to survive all her adventures with her dignity intact, finding a way to take pleasure in even the least interesting of her situations."
