About this title: In this book, winner of the Duff Cooper prize, the author, a military historian, provides not merely a history of warfare but an analysis of world history, and the role that man's impulse to war has played in it. This book is the result of 30 years of reading, research, teaching and commenting on military affairs. It brings together in a single volume the themes explored in the author's earlier books and adds to them the insights gained in his visits to many of the world's major battlefields, a lifetime's friendship with soldiers of different armies and his more recent experience as a war ...

"John Keegan makes this history come alive. It is well written, and researched. Nowhere will you find a more lucid or readable history. One of my favorite authors, who makes each page come alive."
"An interesting account of warfare. The roles it has historically played. How various cultures deal with and wage war. And mostly the build up to World War I and how the world changed with the mechanized military."
"Keegan divides military organizations into six categories: warrior, mercenary, slave, regular, conscript, and militia, then uses roughly structured yet pithily titled sections: Stone, Flesh, Iron, and Fire to proceed on a wide-ranging anthropological and historical review of warfare throughout the ages. Obviously, he is an eminently knowledgeable historian, though like Dr. Jared Diamond, he tends towards geographical determinism. Also, he joins B.H. Liddel-Hart in his disdain for Clauswitz' simplistic and culture-centric representation of war as an extension of politics. He includes such alternative motivations as economics, revenge, ideology, vainglory, imperial expediency, and simple land hunger. The book is very informative with many graphic examples of the various styles of warfare around the world and over the course of human history and pre-history. He does tends to meander a bit, but that's to be expected from someone who has so much in his head that the connections are limitless."
