"This is an earnest, even noble, book, published in 1818 by a white man trying to not only understand Indians, but to pass on to other whites the truth about native nations. Heckewelder was a Moravian missionary, and this book influenced my understanding of Moravians, as well as my understanding of certain native nations.
The book often seems very modern. An example is when Heckewelder defines "barbarous," a word he says some will apply to Indian customs, as "a vague indefinite word, which if it means anything, might perhaps be best explained by something not like ourselves.""
