About this title: For eight years - the years of riots on Channel ferries, street-fighting outside Britain's football grounds, and the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters - Bill Buford, an American, travelled with football hooligans up and down Britain, and to Italy, Turkey, Greece and Germany. He attended a National Front disco and witnessed the robbing of a pub. He saw stabbings and scenes of extreme violence - in one instance, violence that was stopped only when the army sent in a tank. Description: BRAND NEW PAPERBACK. 320 pages. (320 pages) what sort of man spends his saturday afternoons with people named bonehead, paraffin pete and steamin' sammy? this is a book about the experience, and the attractions, of crowd violence. edition new ed (Paperback) read more
"some of the detail is too detailed for me regarding the violence, but i suppose it serves its purpose to totally blow my mind that this kind of violence is perpetuated over soccer. wow.
i had hoped there would be more commentary on class, and there was definitely some of that, but more than anything it just chronicled bored, unsatisfied teen to adult males and their mob mentalities. an interesting comment on crowds to be sure, but not totally what i expected.
buford's ability to have the kind of relationship w various "hooligans" as an ethnographer is by far the most interesting part, although some of this want to experience acts of extreme violence almost plays into exactly what he seems to dislike about all of it.
a good non-fiction read for sure, especially for someone who was raised on soccer."
"I'm not really much of a sports fan, but, after reading this book, I can see that I WILL NEVER ATTEND A SOCCER MATCH. I was astonished, flabbergasted; I can honestly say I never dreamed there were people like this in our world. Buford attends soccer games with the most diehard of fans, fans that throw beer bottles at their opponents, fans that run amok, fans that set fires in the stands, fans that urinate out the windows of their tour buses, fans that steal from vendor in their opponents' cities....I was shocked to read this book."
"Bill Buford has an encounter with a group of English hooligans and decides to dive into this fenomenon, to find out what drives these people and why they choose to fight and seek out violence without any obvious reason.
What happens when Buford gets mixed up with several of these characters and moves within these clans of hooligans, is captivating. He tries to understand and in the process almost becomes one of them. He awes at the mighty forces of a mass crowd, but at the same time is repelled by what these individuals do. Meanwhile he continuously describes what happens, how he feels about it and how it fits into psychological human behaviour. A highly fascinating read."
"Among the Thugs could be an essential work regarding sports. Could be.
This book is extremely dated, obviously. But it shouldn't be. Instead of reaching any sort of conclusion, Buford never gets past the actual violence itself, except to say that people form crowds, and crowds become violent. The stories of the violence are interesting but I felt that they offered nothing new and no real incite into Football culture.
Buford is aware of the fact that he has a unique perspective as an American with no prior football experience. He states this. Yet, he never addresses his Americaness in relation to the violence he was witnessing except for one brief conversation. It would be far more interesting to address the concept of sporting violence in England and Europe as opposed to the subdued and entertainment based sporting experience in America.
The stories Buford shares are interesting nonetheless. However, if you could some how mix *Bloody Confused* and *Among the Thugs*, you might have a perfect book on football culture."
