But it is also a study of the costly exhilarations of war, and of the penalties as well as the glories of human greatness. Introducing this brilliantly innovative edition, Gary Taylor shows how Shakespeare ...

"Re-read Henry IV pts 1 & 2 a while back since I was watching the BBC version with some friends. Since I am going to see Richard III at Chicago Shakespeare in November I figured I should re-read Henry V and Henry VI 1,2 & 3. Henry V is swell, but it doesn't engage me on the level that the Henry IV plays do. The pageant aspect of it is thrilling but the characters, including Henry V, are all a little more broadly drawn."
"After reading the two parts of Henry IV, I had little love for Hal (aka Henry V) - but there's no question that this is HIS play (he's banished Falstaff, as he had to - Falstaff could not survive in the world of Agincourt agonistes). My reading pleasure was extended and revived by watching the Kenneth Branagh movie again - I know: heresy - but Branagh's performance really makes clear that in this play, Shakespeare was inventing "English heroism." And he did a damn fine job too.
As for the Olivier version, well I know heated opinions differ, but for me it was little more than a cartoon."
"The English monarch, Henry the 5th goes after disputed lands and titles in France. At Agincourt the French calvary suffer one of their worst defeats by English archers. An excellent play.
"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more, Or close the wall up with our English dead! In peace there's nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger: Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood."
"I enjoyed reading this play very much. I found the political aspects interesting and compelling. I thought Henry was such a good man as he fought alongside his subjects. I knew that I would find inspiration in the St. Crispin's speech. What I did not count on was such a wonderful and romantic speech from Henry to Katherine. It had me in tears! It is a beautiful speech. I cannot wait to see this play!"
