Far too many !! in there, I felt like I was reading a book written by a very excitable --and hyperactive-- child.
That this book is classified as nonfiction is the most terrifying aspect of this work.
The family were either demented, stupid, or liars. Floating pigs... I think someone dropped some acid and saw the cover of Pink Floyd's Animals. 2+2=4 and all that good stuff.
The priest sounded like a winging four year old, with the bravery to boot.
The young girl was the most credible and brave person in the book, and she talked to a pig that she called Jodey!
"I read this book probably a hundred and fifty times when I was a kid (only a slight exaggeration). The first time was when I was 10. I was so creeped out by it I couldn't sleep that night. Over the years, as the hoax behind the horror has been revealed, it has lost some of its punch, but still, it was one of the first ghost stories/haunted house stories I ever read. From a nostalgia perspective, it still gets points for that.
However, this is truly a horribly written book. The overuse of exclamation points is just the beginning of problems I have with the novel. The liberty that Anson took with the order of events to improve the narrative flow is also problematic , as is the complete invention of things that didn't even happen. George & Kathy Lutz are never really developed as characters - indeed, the most fully realized character in the book is the house, which I suppose is the point.
Anyway, I still liked reading the book after all these years, although I have to admit that I am eager to read Stephen Kaplan's The Amityville Horror Conspiracy which debunks all this stuff for the nonsense that it is. Even though I was still kinda freaked out by Jodie the pig."
"I actually quite enjoyed this book, ignoring all the arguement and debate about whether this is a true story, partly a true story or a complete fabrication Anson has created a chilling and very readable book that rings with enough truth to be believable but with just enough doubt/cynicism to keep a debate going. The horrors experienced by the family are now familiar images and fit the 'traditional' pictures of demonic presence. On the flip side though I have to say that although this is a well written and readable book that is a bit chilling at times when your reading it, it didn't make a lasting impression on me and I haven't lost sleep because of it. Overall its a good read and an interesting story whether you believe it or not, worth reading if you liked the films and enjoy a ghost story or two."
"At the time it came out, I hadn't heard any of the media hype nor - thank gods - had I seen that awful piece of dreck that was the film version. It was one of those cover-to-cover reads that was just too compelling to put down. In fact, it was so good that I stopped and started over so that I could read the thing to my girlfriend. It's the only book I've ever read aloud from start to finish.
Man, I doubt if I could do that now. I don't think my voice would hold up that long, what with the shrieking and all..."
