It reveals many secrets, thanks to 400-plus interviews, and even quotes Cobain's diaries and suicide notes revealing an unreleased Nirvana masterpiece. "i think i read this book before. while the author probably did actually spend 4 years and conduct over 400 interviews to compile this book, he probably couldve put together the same material culled from magazine articles, journals and interviews.
the thing is, nirvana happened just as the internet was becoming a thing and thier career as a popular band coincided with an unprecedented sharing of information. so it was easier than ever to follow as it happened.
which takes away from this book because there really isnt any information in here that i couldnt just read on wikipedia. oh well."
"I read these two Kurt Cobain biographies as part of some research for my new novel, which I wanted to have some tangential connections to Nirvana and Cobain. I read both books along with completely-legally-paying-for (read downloading) all of Nirvana's B-Sides and Rarities and Home-recordings, etc. Actually both the books were quite interesting for very different reasons. Azerrad wrote his book while Cobain was still alive, and so only the epilogue (added later) even addresses his suicide. Cross, on the other hand, wrote his book about 10 years later, so the coming suicide of Cobain really colors almost every chapter in the book. The first book seems completely surprised (as most of the fans were at the time) by Kurt's suicide - despite interviews where Kurt told Azerrad about his destructive drug addictions and so on. The second book seems from the first page to try and unravel the mystery of why he would later kill himself. Cross's book is great to read - in places he brings Kurt to life (no pun intended) almost like a fictional character in a novel - and is greatly aided by unprecedented access to Kurt's old journals and artworks, which Courtney Love has kept in storage all this time. Internet rumors abound that Cross's book will soon be made into a biopic, starring James McAvoy... still not sure how I feel about this, but I imagine there'll be much outrage to come as that goes forward."
"This book is about the life and mind of Kurt Cobain, perhaps one of the most influential rock musicians ever to be on stage and of course the king of grunge and top rocker of the 90's. Charles R. Cross interviews more then 100 people that have met and shaped the life of Kurt. The biography starts off with the birth of Kurt and his young parents trying to provide for the family. Kurt discovers his talent of drawing and begins to pursue this idea of becoming an artist. Life is fine until his father and mother get into a big divorce. Kurt realizes that life is much different and decides to have a more darker out view on life after this. He begins to try out drugs and listen to a punk rock group called the Melvins. Kurt now decides that he should become a musician and picks up a guitar and starts to play. Kurt is still trying to get by in life until his mother kicks him out of the house and he lives on the streets and in hospital waiting rooms. As the years go by he gets better with his guitar skills and meets another kid named Krist Novaselic. Kurt and Krist become best friends and start working on becoming a band. They call the band Nirvana and the music from this band comes from the deep and dark thoughts of Kurt Cobain. Things get better for the band once they get their final drummer named Dave Grohl. The trio release their biggest hit Smells Like Teen Spirit. However Kurt doesn't feel so successful and he turns to drugs such as heroin. The drugs make him a different person but the records and music still keep coming from Kurt's inner thoughts. If one were to fully observe the lyrics of Nirvana songs then you would notice he has something going on in his life. Nirvana at one point becomes the biggest band of Europe and the U.S in the 90's and at this time Kurt meets Courtney Love, lead singer of the band Hole and also in the near future Kurt's wife. Courtney and Kurt do drugs together and Kurt struggles with rehab and becomes a little more depressed. Heroin took over Kurt's life and soon became one the main roots to his dark lyrics and he began to aim most anger towards himself and also says "By the time I was seven I learned to hate everyone" Kurt and Courtney soon after their wedding had a daughter named Francis Bean Cobain. Kurt told everyone that he had never loved anyone more in his entire life. Nirvana was on top of the world but Kurt's inner anger and actions brought the band further down. Kurt begin to cancel shows and he had a rare stomach disease he named Cobain disease. This stomach problem had scared Kurt and he began to puke up blood and his doctors couldn't help him out. Kurt released a few songs that made hits however such as "Heart Shaped Box" "All Apologies" and MTV's least favorite song "Rape Me" These songs showed his love, anger and depression and soon he was on a roll and became more suicidal such as a few suicide attempts. Soon not even his daughter, Courtney or his band mates could keep Kurt from going over the edge. In April of 1994 Kurt committed suicide and died they way he said he would when he was ten: "I want to become a rock musician and then commit suicide and go out in a flame of glory" This story is how he did just that."
