Beginning in the first quarter of the 20th-century, Pentecostalism emerged as a denomination, but one whose beliefs and practices have often been seen as peculiar. "Academic but readable, with most of the research taken from primary sources. Because the chapters are organized topically, it's sometimes hard to get a sense of the chronology of events, but there are plenty of other studies that cover that. Copious notes provide a wealth of information for further study."
"For those who want to understand the rise of the Pentecostal movement of the last century in America, this is an excellent book. It presents a fair, accurate account of the Holy Spirit tongue speaking people who founded several of our modern Pentecostal churches. My own experience in the Church of God, Cleveland, Tenn. as a teenager helped me appreciate this history of the people who helped me experience the love of God as a personal life changing experience. My family were Methodists so I remained in the Methodist tradition but my Pentecostal experience of my teen years influenced me to become a Methodist pastor. I never spoke in tongues but this book helped me understand my family and friends who were members of the Church of God and spoke in tongues. The book does not ignore the struggles that took place in the Pentecostal movement and the failures of some of its leaders and followers. The book traces the evolutionary path that the Pentecostal movement has followed from its beginning to the present time. Those who read this book will have an enhanced appreciation for this segment of our Christian family. I highly recommend this book to those who are truly seeking to understand the Holy Spirit movement."
