"I remember when this book got so much attention, when there was so much controversy surrounding it. When I finally read it (as an adult in my 20s), I thought it was sooooo boring. It almost put me to sleep. The drawings were boring, the plot was boring. What kid could sit through this book long enough to be corrupted? I wanted to like it, if only because it upset conservatives, but YAWN."
"Heather Has Two Mommies is a picture book in which the teacher encourages the students in her class to draw their families. The students have single-parent, lesbian parent, and step-parent families. The teacher describes to the student that the most important thing in families is love for one another. This book would be useful in a read-aloud so that the teacher can discuss the book with the students and answer any questions that they have."
"I have heard alot about this book. I am in love with banned book, and seeing as I am a queer activist, I excitedly took it out when I randomly saw it in my library. I did not like the style of the illustrations or the writing much, but I really liked the idea of the book. I kept reading it and would have given it a high rating because of it's great message, except it makes one mistake.
After we are introduced to Heather, who has two mommies, we are introduced to other children with "Different" families to learn how to tolerate them. One, Joshua, has divorced parentsz and his mother remarries. The book makes the mistake of saying he has two fathers.
As a child of divorced parents it has always offended me when people say I have two mothers or two fathers, because I DO NOT. No one can replace my mother, or my rather.
Thus, it recieved a low rating because the writing and illustrations were bad, and the content was offensive. I think it would have failed to reach children as well because it does not explain tat mama kate and mama jane, the two lesbian mothers, love each other, so children will not really learn how to be tolerant.
