"Summary: This book is a realistic ficiton story about a boy who had troubled parents, and was sent to live with his cousin Harris and his family on a farm. It shows how he struggles to learn the new lifestyle, but he has a lot of fun on the way. Also, it shows how he comes to love his new family. The main characer and Harris do things like milking cows, catching mice, and fighting pigs. These things add up to a great summer of fun, and he never wants to leave. Explaination: I rated this book with four stars because i enoyed reading about the crazy things Harris and his cousin encountered. It was a prtty easy read, but it was still very entertaining and detailed. What I especially liked about this story was how clueless the main character was when he arrived, and how he addapted to his new lifestyle in fun and wild ways. Also, all though it was a fun story, it also had a serious side too. It showed how a young by grows up and how he realizes what's really imporant. I reccomend this book to someone who would like a fun and interesing story."
"I found this book randomly in a pile of books from elementary school. I remember really enjoying the book but forgot what it was about so I decided I had to read it. And I'm so glad I did. The story is about a young boy (we are never told his name) who is forced to move out of his parents house for the summer due to their alcohol abuse problems. He is taken to the Larsons, very distant relatives, who live on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The boy meets the Larson's kid Harris who is happy to have someone to play with. The whole summer they work on the farm and get in trouble with Harris's dangerous games. By the end of the summer they find that the boy has really become part of the family. I haven't laughed out loud at a book for a long time. The book was hilarious and was a nice change to my usually interests (this being a book mainly written for young adults). I found a way to connect with the child themes even though I am older, thus making it a book for all ages. The story and writing is short and sweet and I loved the creative personalities of each character (including the animals on the farm). In addition to the funny tale the book also ended with a subtle message about family value and inclusion. I am curious about the other books Gary Paulsen has written. I would recommend Harris and Me to everyone."
"My favorite Paulsen book! Both of my sons have read this title and have laughed out loud at regular intervals. The predicaments the title characters get into are delightfully uncomfortable for them and humorous for us."
"Such a great story. The main character (who is never named) is sent to live with distant relatives after his alcoholic parents are unable to provide for him. The family lives on a farm and he finds that, while farm life was hard work in 1950s Minnesota, there was also a great deal of adventure. Most of the adventure comes from his younger cousin, Harris, who knows no bounds in his pursuits of "play". Whether they are jumping on the backs of 300 lbs. hogs- pretending they are "commie japs", or the backs of 1000+ lbs. draft horses from a hayloft- pretending to be Gene Autry, or peeing on an electric fence, it is a memorable summer for the city boy and Harris. A classic boys' story. I could see my brother or my husband in so many of these misadventures. These are exactly the way boys entertain themselves on a farm in summer!!"
