"I was fortunate in my seventh year to have a baby brother, my only blood sibling, brought into the house. Mom apologized when we picked up the very little, because premature, Fin Einar at Elgin's Sherman Hospital, worrying that I'd think him ugly. He was, his head mishapen, his features raw and red, but I thought he was wonderfully so. My dog, Jimmy Olsen, upon tasting him, agreed.
It was great to have a little brother!--especially when he started toddling and talking and could sit still long enough to be told a story or read to. Having been an only child for so long, he and Jimmy were my primary family and best friends around the house.
Dad's mom, Lajla, and her husband, Chris (whom Fin, to his delight, started calling "Buddy", establishing a special relationship between the two of them), were very good to both of us throughout childhood. While I was getting the Time/Life series of this and that, Fin got some deal where a different children's book would come in the mail to our house every month. A lot of them were Dr. Seuss. From my seven-years-older perspective the only good ones were Dr. Seuss.
Pre-schoolers being pre-schoolers, Fin liked to pour over the same books again and again and again. Uniquely, Seuss was tolerable, even with repetition. For one thing, my first book which wasn't a hand-me-down was The Cat in the Hat, so there was an element of nostalgia involved. For another, his books were ideal for teaching reading and Green Eggs was especially designed as a first primer. Besides, with this one there was a moral lesson involved, one most immediately relevant to Fin's already picky eating habits. Finally, there is this psychedelic quality to Seuss which has always fascinated me although I cannot pin it down. What is it with these wierd theriomorphs, many of them naked, all brightly colored in surrealistic environments? Why aren't children frightened? What horror was the author sublimating with these grotesque displays? Why do kids like such stuff? Why do so many adults like bizarre scary movies anyway?
Years later, Fin had a kid himself, the remarkable Anna-Kristina, now thirteen, and I was afforded yet another opportunity to read the same books again and again and again. This time there was more success. She not only learned how to read, like her father, but also will eat almost anything and at least pretend to appreciate it, unlike her father. The repetition must have helped me as well in getting the message across.
You can read Anna-Kristina's reviews here on GoodReads. I'm still waiting to hear what she thinks after, lo, these many years, about the good doctor."
"A major disappointment after the Seuss masterpiece "The Cat in the Hat." Not much going on here except some clever wordplay. Plot and character development need major work. All in all, who does Seuss think he's kidding with this phoned-in, dashed off attempt at cashing in on his considerable brand name? Seuss - get real! If you cannot dig deeper into your bag of tricks, then it's time to focus on your day job as a healthcare professional."
