"Another strong installment. I liked it a bit better than the first book. I like, particularly, the focus on Nynaeve, Egwene, Min, and Elayne. It's not really a departure from the previous book, but it did seem to have a bit more focus, strangely, since the main characters have all gone their separate ways and you follow them separately. I guess It's probably just because the story has a bit more focus at this point and there is less time wasted on introducing new characters (although there are some of those too). It does always lurk in the back of my mind that this story isn't going to draw to a conclusion any time soon with how many books there are in this series (although , I guess, that could be a good thing if the quality is maintained)."
"The Heroes continue on their quest (quests?)...Retrieve the Horn of Valere...meanwhile Elayne and Nynaeve go to the White Tower to begin training as Aes Sedai.
The scene of Rand battling Ba'alzamon is one of the more memoranle scenes I've ever read....I'd like to say more but I assume there are people reading this who haven't read the book yet.
Again (read my more extensive and bitter review of volume 1...I won't go through my disappointed diatribe each time.) this volume is rife wth promise and very enjoyable."
"I enjoyed this book more than the first, as it seemed to develop more of its own voice not seeming to follow along the LoTR formula so much. Again the writing is very good, moving the characters through a terrifically defined world. There is some frustration on my part with the characters when you want them to see what seems so glaringly obvious to the reader, but I'm pretty certain that is my own lack of patience shining through. The climax was much more satisfying to me than in 'Eye of the World', as well, as it felt like it was the actions of the characters rather than sheer luck which resolved things. As with any story I find that, as much as anything, I judge it by how much I want to read the next book (whether or not such a thing exists), and I definitely am feeling that antsy sensation of wanting to get my hands on the next book as soon as possible."
"The Great Hunt continues in this fantasy epic, as more characters are introduced and those already established begin to become more developed. Once again the characters get separated into their own storylines, even though we can see how they are going to all work together as the books progress.
It's interesting to see how much Jordan really puts in his books to foreshadow future events. I think what makes him such a master storyteller and great writer, is that there are so many other things going on, it's hard to see the things which are going to happen in the future which are foretold through reading of auras to dreams, to even the prophecies themselves which, when uttered, seem cryptic, but really do make sense.
I think the Great Hunt shows many of the main characters of this series as reluctant to accept what the "Pattern" wants for them. (The Wheel of Time is compared to a loom, spinning out threads (individual lives) and then ultimately the greater pattern of ... well, whatever it's weaving.) I don't know if I can say Great Hunt is my favorite, but I do think it's necessary."
