About this title: The tale of the orphan, Pip, and his mysterious benefactor provides a grotesque but pointed comedy that explores the many levels of English society with insight and sympathy as well as a satiric eye. Considered by many to be Dickens's best novel, GREAT EXPECTATIONS is the story of a young man who rises out of a rough, deprived childhood to a life ...

"THIS BOOK WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! Although sophisticated, it is extremely boring to read and has way too much detail! THERE IS NOT THAT MUCH TO SAY! I FEEL LIKE I READ 500 pgs. ON SOMETHING THAT COULD EASILY BE WRITTEN IN 200! ITS 500 pgs. ABOUT SOMEONE COMING INTO PROPERTY! BIG DEAL! It almost made me cry it was so boring. I almost didn't finish it and i absolutely love reading and have almost never put down a book and not finished. However horrible, if u want a book to put u to sleep, ITS THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU!
Anyway, all in all, what i'm saying is that its horrible, DON'T BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"A much-loved novel, a favourite of many people - what a shame I couldn't warm to it. To be perfectly honest, I found the characters trite and unbelievable, the plot clunky, the descriptions overdone. I realise everything about Dickens was a bit overdone, with frills and bells on, and perhaps that is why it is so well loved, but it wasn't for me. There were some great turns of phrase, but over-all I was left unable to warm from it and with a bit of a Dickens-phobia."
"I think this book may have made it official for me: I'm just not much of a Dickens fan.
My first introduction to Dickens was A Tale of Two Cities, which we were required to read in HS. It was also my first introduction to Cliff's Notes. :)
I tried Dickens again with Oliver Twist last year. It was abridged. I still could barely get through it, and ended up skipping ahead to the end -- something I almost never do.
It's not that Dickens' storylines aren't interesting to me, because they are. His characters are quite vivid and likeable, and Dickens' writing is obviously excellent (his books are classics, after all). I think my problem with him is that he is just so darned WORDY.
One of my GR friends mentioned in her review of this book that Dickens was paid per word. Well then... suddenly it all makes sense. THAT'S why his books feel so incredibly drawn out to me.
I actually do like long epic-like novels that keep me hooked on every word for all their plethora of pages. But that's the thing with Dickens for me, I guess. I don't hang on every word. Or even every other word. I lose interest about 2 chapters in, and never quite fully regain it again.
Something tells me I'm missing out, though. I mean, it's Dickens. He's one of the greatest authors of all time, right? Oh well. I haven't given up on him yet. I plan to read A Christmas Carol next month. I think I might like it. At least, I liked all 10 million movie versions, so I'm thinking that's a good sign. Plus, it's nice and short. :)"
"This book should be renamed "Unrealized Expectations". It's hard to live up to the hype with a title like "Great Expectations". I chose this book to read for a book report assignment in high school. Unfortunately, my choice was based on my fondness of "A Christmas Carol", also by Charles Dickens. Little did I know that the book is longer than the Bible and was not very engaging in any way. The only reason I rated this with two stars instead of one is because it's a classic (whatever that's supposed to mean)."
