"Cleaning off my bookshelves, I put this series into the Goodwill box, and then a few days later I pulled it out again and started reading. If you were to ask me my favorite authors, Zelazny's name probably wouldn't come to mind, but he's definitely on the list even if I forget about him for long periods of time.
"Many readers have complained that the series goes on too long and the ending is disappointing." Definitely agree with that. The last 20 pages of the last book I was nervously eyeballing the remaining pages, thinking "There's no way he's going to wrap all of this up in time!" and hey, I was right.
But otherwise, there are worse ways to spend some time than hanging out with the Amber family, especially the first series of books (Corwin's story).
(And yes, they're back in the Goodwill box again...)"
"This is my favorite series ever. Period. Ever few years I come back to it and I never fail to find something new hidden in its pages. Zelazny creates a surreality that exists in that edge of consciousness, where you think you see something out of the corner of your eye, turn, but nothing is there; in that dreamscape that is neither the oblivion of sleep nor the understanding of waking. Amber is a world of dualities, chaos and order, love and hate, and I love it because as I change and grow older, it speaks another language to me with each reading. Walking the pattern, or reading a book, is never the same, because I am never the same."
Roger Zelazny has the incredible gift of ignoring genre. Classify it if you must, but the lines between sci-fi and fantasy or more than blurred. He took that line, flossed his teeth with it, and threw it away.
Reality is skewed and anchored to the city of Amber, the origin of all worlds, everything a parallel or "shadow" of Amber and it's counter-part, the realm of Chaos.
Traveling all realities, the ruling families of Amber and Chaos play, plot and scheme, love, hate, and incite war. They represent the strongest nodes in the spectrum of personalities in mankind - powerful, immortal, but flawed.
The first five books in the series are told in first person by the perspective of Corwin, one of nine Princes of Amber. The last five, by Merlin, from the realm of Chaos.
"The Great Book of Amber collects all ten novels of Roger Zelazny's Amber series, a swashbuckling tale of magic and wonder that ranges across parallel worlds. The central conceit is that there is an infinite set of parallel universes, spanning just about any possibility you can think of -- but they are not all created equal. Somewhere in back of it all lies the golden city of Amber, ruled by scheming immortals who regard themselves as lords of creation, and their land as the one true world, of which all others, including our own prosaic Earth, are but "Shadows." They are partly right, but their hubris nearly brings about their downfall, and therein lies a tale... This wildly open setting is half the fun, and the other half is the characters, particularly the narrator of the first five books, Prince Corwin, a loser in Amber's ongoing power struggles, who in the beginning is an amnesiac living on our Earth. How Corwin fights, loves, and schemes his way back into competition for the throne -- and how he grows up a little in the bargain -- makes for a fantastic tale. The next five books, written years later, are a bit of a letdown, as both the narrator Merlin and his story seem just a bit less focused and engaging, and Zelazny not quite on top of his game. For a Zelazny fanatic like myself, the second set of five books, beginning with Trumps of Doom, is a certainly a fun read, but a more casual reader might want to stop with the end of Corwin's saga, The Courts of Chaos. If you're new to Amber, I'd suggest buying or borrowing a standalone copy of the first book, Nine Princes in Amber. If you're as swept up as I was, then you'll find The Great Book of Amber a good value. You should also be aware that Zelazny published a few short stories about Amber that are not in this volume. Although I haven't read them, I understand at least some can be found in his story collection Manna From Heaven. Also, there is a prequel series available, written by John Gregory Betancourt."
