Description: Robert Andrew Parker. Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. Hardcopy Beautifully illustrated book in "like new" condition. "Grandfather tells a story about shape-changing fox fairies who try to best each other until a hunter brings danger to both of them. " read more
The artwork in the story takes two forms: Parker illustrates each page in an impressionist style with watery colors depicting a grandfather telling his grandaughter a folktale. While each page has a full-sized-illustration, the story-within-a-story is also told using the traditional seven-piece tangram shapes to represent two shape-changing foxes who learn the value of friendship over competition.
The folktale is told within the context of a grandfather-granddaughter relationship and unfolds at a good pace to keep the reader/listener engaged and wondering what is going to happen next.
The story is simplistic, but would appeal to children's concerns about friendship and competition and they would definitely enjoy re-creating the tangram images along with the the story. The whole concept of a tangram is not really explained in the text, though, so the person reading the story would need to provide some background information to make the tangram tie-in meaningful.

Lesson plan: Give each child some paper tangram sets and have them tell/write a short story using the tangrams to illustrate."
"Little Soo begs Grandfather Tang to tell her a story about fox fairies. So grandfather begins a story about Chou and Wu Ling, two fox fairies who can change themselves into different animals. When danger threatens one of the fox fairies, they put their competition aside in order to save each other.
In addition to the lovely Chinese folktale, the addition of tangram design embedded in the text adds a different curricular dimension to this picture book. This book can be used to introduce tangram design for kindergarten and primary grades as students can recreate the animal shapes featured in the story, and then can be challenged to use the seven tangram shapes to create new designs."
