Buck traces the whole cycle of life: its terrors, its passions, its ambitions and rewards. Beloved by millions of readers, her brilliant novel is a universal tale of the destiny of man. Though more than sixty years have passed since it won the Pulitzer Prize, it has retained its popularity and become one of the great modern classics. 'I can only write what I know, and I know nothing but China, having always lived there,' wrote Pearl Buck. In THE GOOD EARTH she presents a graphic view of a China when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings for the ordinary people. This moving, classic story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-lan should be mandatory reading for those who would fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people during this century.Hide synopsis

Description:Very Good with no dust jacket. First edition of the great novel...Very Good with no dust jacket. First edition of the great novel of China, but likely not the first state. Nearly meets the points for a first state: 1) Statement on publisher's page: 'for the John Day Publishing Co. ' (instead of the actual name, 'John Day Company'); 2) Typo on line 17 of page 100 wherein the word 'fleas' is misspelled as 'flees'; 3) Statement on publisher's page is: 'Copyright 1931 by Pearl S. Buck'. However, the top edge is painted in bright orange on this volume; some have maintained that the color brown is the only acceptable color for the first state. This copy in full mustard cloth-covered boards with heavily deckled fore edge. Green endpapers feature illustrations of peasants in procession. The author's name and title are bright on front cover in gilt, along with blindstamped farm field and sun decoration. Spine is very slightly faded, but the gilt titling is very readable. Interior has inked signature on the half title page; otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. Volume is firm and tight, with no looseness. Front cover cloth very slightly abraded. Lacks the scarce dust jacket. ---This winner of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize makes for a handsome addition to the booklover's library. This novel tells the epic story of Wang Lung and his wife O-Lan and their life as peasants in pre-revolutionary China.; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 375 pages.

This book was exceptionally written and easy to read. It was difficult to read, though as you delve into these characters and feel so much sympathy for them.
