"The Good: An excellent piece of neo-noir. The atmosphere is authentic and the characters are real people. The plot is convoluted, in the best hard boiled tradition, but remains plausible. I'm looking forward to reading more of Lehane's mysteries.
The Bad: Lehane makes copious pop culture references; as a means of fleshing out a character this rarely works well. For the most part the references came across as intrusive and a little grasping. Also, while this is not a negative in and of itself, this is a depressing book about bad things happening to good people. Prepare to have your moral sensibilities challenged."
"Lehane does a great job of keeping the reader in suspense from beginning to end. He masterfully develops his protagonists by not just focusing in on their heroic qualities, but by allowing us to be exposed to Patrick and Angie's vulnerabilities as they must deal with the dark gritty world of child abductors. BE PREPARED for some creepy scenes! Aside from just being an entertaining mystery novel full of twists and turns, I found several of the moral dilemmas worthy to ponder, especially at the story's conclusion. I look forward to reading more of Lehane's work."
"Boston P.I.'s Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro investigate the dissapearance of a 4-year old girl. In their investigation, Kenzie and Gennaro uncover ties with drug dealers and other shady characters, corruption, and conspiracy. I really enjoyed this book. Good, realistic writing and dialogue as well as numerous twists and turns kept me interested and guessing until the very end. I liked how the characters weren't strictly good or evil but instead possessed both postive and negative characteristics. It made them more realistic and relatable. I also liked how the good vs. bad, right vs. wrong storyline was very blurred in this book, just like it usually is in real life. The story really questioned issues such as what is the right thing to do, whether the seemingly right thing is always the right choice, and whether doing something wrong for the right reasons is acceptable. I liked how the book brought up all of these issues but offered no easy solutions. Because there are no easy solutions. My only criticisms were that the story was very graphic and violent and that some of the plot twists were a little unbelievable. But those are small quibbles in an otherwise interesting, complex, immensely readable book."
"This crime novel contained graphic descriptions of murder vitims and abducted children that I found difficult to get through. The author has used them to set up the central theme of good and evil being relative rather than absolute by creating characters that have a real moral revulsion to the most evil acts described and yet are party to events that are also evil by the standards of society (or of other characters in the book). The pace is a bit slow in the first third of the book, but picks up, and feels a bit rushed by the conclusion. Several of the characters are well realized; but the narrator is strangely bland and vague in comparison. Also, the introduction of an extremely well-informed Justice Department agent feels a bit forced.
AFTER WRITING MY NOTES ... I found out that this is actually one of a series of books that Lehane has written using the Kenzie/Gennaro characters. That could well explain why I found the narrator (Kenzie) underdeveloped."
