About this title: It is April 1793 and the final power struggle of the French Revolution is taking hold: the aristocrats are dead and the poor are fighting for bread in the streets. In a Paris swept by fear and hunger lives Gamelin, a revolutionary young artist appointed magistrate, and given the power of life and death over the citizens of France. But his intense idealism and unbridled single-mindedness drive him inexorably towards catastrophe. Published in 1912, The Gods Will Have Blood is a breathtaking story of the dangers of fanaticism, while its depiction of the violence and devastation of the Reign of ...

"An intelligent, subtle, touching, insightful book about the Jacobin Terror. Gentle psychological exploration of why some men do evil and others do good. Wonderful characters, subtle evocation of the times. Very delicate prose style."
"it was a bit dry all the way through, towards the very end it picked up interest. but for the most part I did not feel drawn into the story or the characters too much. It seemed like the author was too caught up in sarcastic prose to present an engaging story. It also seemed to move too spastically, reaching conclusions and jumping around without giving enough connection between cause and effect. Perhaps someone with a better knowledge of the French Revolution than I might get a more enjoyable read from this book."
