"Laugh-out-loud at times, this irreverent take on the life of David is thought-provoking, distinctive, and, unfortunately, fairly tedious. Heller employs the same storytelling technique he used in Catch-22, introducing stories and referencing them several times before actually laying them out in full. I thought this approach was quite effective in Catch-22, a good example of technique enforcing theme. Here, however, the repetition as you get closer and closer to the whole story is tiresome. I think a good editor could easily cut 100 pages out of this book.
This book has heart, and I'm glad I read it, but I don't think I would recommend it."
"The voice was great, and it was indeed funny, but toward the middle I started getting tired of the circling narrative. It didn't feel like there was any plot or direction. By the end I got back into it because the plot showed itself again. Maybe if I read it a second time knowing the direction I would be able to appreciate the voice even more."
"I read this when it first came out and loved it. It's full of his usual, crazy mixed up characters and situations that seem impossibly real. Every time something goes wrong and the ending is unbelievable, the main character says,"Go figure."
It's kind of become an anthem I've used to cope with paradoxes, especially the ones that are hopelessly irreversible."
"Great for theology nerds and those who enjoy Heller's classically disjointed style. However it's so unstructured that it makes you a bit crazy by the end."
