"Useful as social history, terrible as autobiography -- especially if, like me, you're looking for the gossip and personal revelation (homegirl was forced into marriage with British duke but eventually sought divorce and remarried, all of this before World War I - nice, right?) that the author's impeccable manners make impossible. I wanted a soft-centered chocolate, but this book is a hard candy."
"I went through a period of reading about American heiresses who were married off to British aristocracy. This, obviously, was the primary example of that type of bargain. The Duchess-to-be almost had cold feet at the altar . . . she kept the crowd at the church waiting a considerable time before she showed up for the ceremony that her mother had planned, schemed for and wholly arranged. Mis-matched and unhappy, Consuelo, nevertheless, did her best to fulfill her role as the Lady of the Manor, which was being rebuilt with her money, but her husband little cared for her and maintained "other arrangements." Eventually she bore him two sons to carry on the family name, and then, once the sons were of an age to bear it, if not perhaps understand, she separated from the Duke. Later, there was a divorce and she was happily married to someone from within her own set; they spent their remaining years on the Continent. This was a frank and honest book, that perhaps could not have been written until now, when class lines have ceased to mean what they did. It portrays a riveting picture of society manipulating and a heart-rending one of poor Consuelo trying so hard, and with absolutely no help anywhere."
"I think I'd enjoy a third person biography of Consuelo Vanderbilt-- I get the sense that there's a lot more to the story than she herself presents it. Fun for fans of the gilded age, but for the most part not too exciting: the frivolity of the London season is so tiring; weekend hunting parties at Blenheim palace are ever so tiring for the hostess; etc. Then, in the last twenty pages, the story becomes completely and unexpectedly gripping as the author and her husband are trying to get out of the way of the Nazi invasion of France. A decent read all in all, if a bit slack toward the middle."
"Interesting after visiting Blenheim Palace. Consuelo was an heiress to the Vanderbilt fortune. Her mother forced her into a marriage in the English aristocracy for the prestige. She was literally locked in her room and not allowed contact with the outside world. This was before telephones etc. and they had many servants with strict orders to watch her. The Duke of Marlborough wasn't in love with her and vice versa but her money helped maintain his palace. After many years of unhappy marriage and producing an heir and a spare, they were divorced. I enjoyed the book grudgingly. Her life was extremely full and interesting. From the gilded age to the beginning of WWII, her life was full of interesting and famous people. It was amazing that she wrote this book herself. There in lies the problem. I could have done with a lot less wordiness and French phrases (almost as if to show she was very sophisticated more than to tell the story). The story could have been told a lot simpler. It did however spark my interest enough to buy the book "Consuelo and Alva" about the relationship between her and her mother."
