About this title: Hindu mystic, poet, teacher, Nobel prize winner, Rabindranath Tagore stands among the greatest of Asiatic poets of all time. William Butler Yeats says that this 19th century writer "like Chaucer's Forerunners, writes music for his words and (that he) is so abundant, so spontaneous, so daring in his passon, and so full of surprise". John Alden Carpenter, the noted American composer, has set several of these beautiful lyrics to music.

"The poems within this book are beautiful. They explained Tagores view of the cosmos and how he finds his place in the the space between acceptance of the new and loyalty to the old. I plan on reading this book again in a few months with the hope of gaining a new appreciation of the writing."
"Who dare say much against a Nobel Laureate who has written national anthems for 2 countries ? Its a book I appreciate, but I didn't enjoy reading it.
True to the title, Geet-anjali is essentially a set of prayers (song-offerings)...inspirational thoughts to uplift you from your defeatist mode of thinking into an elevated mode of thinking...now I personally am not too fond of this metaphysical brainwashing by repetition...i wonder if it was intended for the masses ?!! ...i like to view my life as a series of intense emotions and impulses... and God and prayers have little to add to it...
Nevertheless, some of Tagore's poems on country, world, life, death, strength, perseverance and people are good. I am not sure why do people call Tagore a romantic. He is a realist. He is a believer. But he is not a romantic. And to me, romance stands for the romanticism of ideas, not limited to passionate love of your lover...In fact, several of Tagore's poems on love are focused on a non-idealized, non-romantic notion of love...and feel very mechanically rhymed to me. Some I do like though...
As the night keeps hidden in its gloom the petition for light, even thus in the depth of my unconsciousness rings the cry ---`I want thee, only thee'.
As the storm still seeks its end in peace when it strikes against peace with all its might, even thus my rebellion strikes against thy love and still its cry is ---`I want thee, only thee'.
Another poem that mystifies me is "She".
I had read "Mind without Fear" back in school days...it reminds me of John Lennon's Imagine...my all time favorite song...for its music, the magical voice of Lennon and the lyrics...
"Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;" - TAGORE
"Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too " - JOHN LENNON"
