"This was a really nice book to read. It was sweet and innocent. If I compared it to another book, I would compare it to Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. It tells the story of a girl living in a rural setting in the early part of the 1900s. She has lived her life with few advantages, yet she has educated herself and grown into a person of charm and integrity. The story starts with the girl starting high school and follows her story through her early adult years. She is ill prepared for her first day of school in the nearby town and you and she wonder if she will go back again. Throughout the book, you find youself cheering for the girl's achievements and feeling deep disapointment for the things that go wrong in her life. The story is one of determination and success. It was a nice change."
"This too is the story of Redemption, a story of having our natures changed. In many ways Elnora is a Christ figure, but also a human being that I could be like. She was meek and humble and submissive to God's will and it blessed her in the end. It not only blessed her, but her effect reached to her immediate family as well as everyone she came in contact with adding to their own redemption as well. It was her hero's journey as well. Some might think it's too cheesy because of the spiritual aspect of her life and her reliance on God, but if that's true, then I am a cheesy person as well, because I'm learning to trust God in all things. Elnora reminded me of that. She is my friend. I love the variety of characters in this book."
"I bought this book as a gift. I had read another addition that I own. I was very happy to find this new addition online at such a great price. My friend is very satisfied with it."
"Of course I've read this before, but I wanted a happy, sweet book for the weekend and loved it all over again. Every time I read a Porter I want to move to Indiana. I really love how, when an author is in love with the place they're writing about, it creates that kind of response.
I really liked the point about the "uncontrolled temper" being a very undesirable and unattractive characteristic in a woman. I need the advice:)
JoDean, is this on the girl-book list? Maybe it should be. Perhaps there's a little too much about "proper clothing" or perhaps not? I know I could use more refinement in every category, and, although we don't like to think of it, clothing really does have a lot to do with how we act, feel and are perceived by others."
