"Received as a stocking stuffer...and what a fantastic one!
To find "the" gift someone would want (without perhaps even knowing it themselves) takes the much greater gift of love; encompassing sacrifice, thought, care, and the shared joy in giving/receiving such a special gift, and this short story captures that spirit of love & generosity perfectly.
"One of my favorites, and this edition of O. Henry's classic is so beautifully illustrated. It never fails to bring the tears. A story of sacrifice for those who loved each other."
"This is the book about what a great gift really is. The Magi were the first gift givers, and they went to great lengths (at least in distance) to bring valuable presents to Christ. In this story Della and James sacrificed what they cherished most in order to buy their loved one a wonderful gift. Della sold her long, gorgeous hair to a wig maker in order to buy James a chain for his pocket watch. And James pawned his pocket watch in order to buy Della tortise shell combs for her hair.
A lump comes up in my throat just thinking about it.
An added pleasure in this edition were the beautiful illustrations."
"The Gift of the Magi is one of many short stories written by O. Henry (1862-1910). Love and sacrifice are the dominant themes in this story. It concludes with an ironic twist. In fact, I use this story to teach my eighth graders the literary term of irony. Despite a few challenging vocabulary words, it can be easily understood, read aloud, and discussed in about thirty minutes. Again, this is a great story to teach not only about love and sacrifice but irony as well. Highly recommended."
