Grace is a little girl who loves listening to stories and then wants to act out the characters. Students will definitely be able to identify with the character Grace who always is pretending to be someone else. Seeing Grace take on a variety of characters, gives children the confidence to learn more about themselves, their families and where they came from. The student's are then able to engage their imaginations in the stories she acts out and compare them to their own personal lives. What a great lesson to teach children about themselves. They can be whoever they want to be. The story also shows a great lesson of learning from previous generations and all they have to offer. I think children need to know they are supported by other adults. This book demonstrates that point exactly. The book is a starting point for other discussions and stories that children live with everyday. One of those situations is positive black role models. This is a great role model book for black girls. It demonstrates value in family history and values, ethnic stories, and how to deal with peer pressure and build strong self confidence. This is a book a teacher could go deeply into, developing many classroom activities for the students. Lastly I live the questions Grace asks. She stirs the normal thought process of those around her. Hopefully the teacher and students will be stirred the same way; such as Peter is a Boy and Peter isn't black. I love the fact that Grace reaches beyond stereotyping to achieve her dreams and goals, Peter Pan would be proud."
"I listened to this book on tape. Amazing Grace was written by Mary Hoffman and illustrated by Caroline Binch. It was published by Frances Lincoln Limited in 1991. This is a story about young black girl is full of energy and creativity. She loves to act out stories that she has read and take on various roles of different characters. She likes to dress up and role-play by herself and with her family members. One day at school, there is an announcement that there will be a school play. When Grace hears this, she is immediately interested in participating. It was determined that the school play was going to be "Peter Pan". Grace was determined to become the lead role in the play, but soon many of her classmates discouraged her and told her she could not be Peter Pan because she was a girl and because she was black. Because of her mother and grandmother, Grace stands up for her beliefs and puts her mind to becoming the lead role. Her hard work and determination paid off and she became the lead role in the play. This book was written very well and portrays a wonderful message to all children. I really enjoyed how the author depicted the main character and demonstrated how young children can do anything they put their minds to. I think this book could be used in the classroom to help teach children about perseverance and equality. The story shows that anybody, no matter the color of your skin, can pursue their dreams if they put their mind to it. Interest Level: Elementary School"
"Summary: Amazing Grace is a picture book about a young black girl named Grace. She loved stories of any kind and especially loved acting them out. She wants to become Peter Pan in a play until she is told by other students that she can not because she is a girl and she is black. Her Nana takes her to see that a black women can do anything she wants to by showing her a ballerina. Grace then gains the confidence to believe she can do anything she wants. Reflection: After hearing about the book Amazing Grace I looked for it because I was so interested. I thought this book was not only well written, but I also thought the illustrations were wonderful. The portrayal of Grace as well as the other characters really allowed her personality to come through. It was great to see that this book was written for younger students yet it touched upon so many issues. Grace was a girl that had an imagination without gender or cultural boundaries. The author addressed not only gender stereotypes, but also cultural issues and the importance of believing in yourself. I think that my students would really enjoy this book. I think they would see themselves in this character and this could really lead into a lesson with them about treating each other as equals and seeing ourselves as equals. I would recommend this book to others to read. It may be a bit of an older book, but the story is very strong and sends a good message to young readers."
