While allied troops were liberating concentration camps in Europe, on the Philippines a special force of US soldiers went 30 miles into Japanese held territory to rescue those survivors. "Great research yields a fascinating story that covers all the details of a very sad episode in history of the U.S. during WWII. These unfortunate soldiers lost at Bataan, forced to walk to the prison camp of Cabanatuan, and spending most of the war there being mistreated (generally) by the Japanese guards. I did not know anything about this at all, except for the general term "Bataan death march". This truly shows the extreme depths in which the human soul can survive and triumph, through the service of a dedicated group of soldiers called the Army Rangers under the leadership of Col. Mucci and Captain Prince. Reads like fiction but with specific details that show how much investigation Mr. Sides did to write this story. Great!"
"Considered by many historians as one of the greatest rescue missions of WWII, the freeing of 150 POWs in a Japanese interment camp in the Philippine Island of Luzon is retold in this well crafted historical account. Mr. Sides has not only thoroughly researched previous sources on this subject, but he has done extensive interviews with participants and he has visited the locations central to the story. Rather than spin an uninterrupted chronological narrative, the author interweaves flashbacks to the Bataan Death March as well as separate incidents all tangentially germane to the story of the rescue.
We are not spared the gruesome details that make war the brutal business it is, and therefore we are led through some very uncomfortable episodes before finally coming to the dramatic rescue.
There is much to admire in this work. Not only is this a scholarly approach, but especially in key dramatic scenes, the author displays writing talent as descriptive as any accomplished novelist.
For these reasons this book will take its place among my favorite war histories."
"I'm a senior history major who just went through historiography class, so i've become rather skeptical about history books. This one however is excellent!! It is very balanced, giving credit where it is due and showing both sides of the story without bias. It can get very graphic but the author does a fabulous job of accurately portraying life in the camps or on the Death March. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down while I was reading it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history, or even just a good story."
