About this title: During the rise of Nazism, Joe Kavalier escapes from Prague and immigrates to America, where he hopes to make enough money to bring the rest of his family with him. He teams up with Sammy Clay, his Brooklyn cousin, to create comic book characters who act out the dreams of their creators--who, meanwhile, both become involved with the same woman, the devastating Rosa Saks. Chabon's critically acclaimed novel provides not only a window into the immigrant experience but also a hymn of praise to the golden age of the comics. THE AMAZING ADVENTURES was a New York Times Notable Book for the year ...

"Growing up and living in Cleveland (home of Superman's creators), I thought this was a great tribute to the times and the characters of the book. It is well-written and intelligent and draws the reader into the story."
"An odd thing about Chabon - when I'm immersed in the middle of one of his books, I'm as fully engaged as with just about any work by anyone else I've ever read. But, inevitably, as I near the end of his novels, I sense a growing distance, and somehow, upon reaching the end, I'm disengaged, and no longer have that compelling urge and desire to want to know more, as you might in a book you don't wish to end; nor do I find the sense of completion that works its way into being at the completion of other novels. I feel, rather ... lost, or adrift in some odd limbo that is ultimately unsatisfying.
I guess some might say this is indicative of his power as a writer, in that he doesn't feel it necessary to appease his readers with tidy endings or the like, but for me, I feel like, as well-written and entertaining are his works, that he has yet to write a complete novel. This won't stop me from recommending his works to others, nor will it stop me from reading his future works, but I'll read those next books in the hopes that he gives me more than he has to this point."
"I did not get this book. First of all, there was too much gay rape. Second, not enough cocaine. Also, I do not like cartoons. This book could be renamed Superman Had Daddy Issues and nobody would know the difference, except the people who read it, who wouldn't care anyway, 'cause they'd all be too shocked about the gay rape. Ban this useless book from Good Reads.
