Description: Brand New. Paperback. A General Theory of Love draws on the latest scientific research to demonstrate that our nervous systems are not self-contained: from earliest childhood, our brains actually link with those of the people close to us, in a silent rhythm that alters the very structure of our brains, establishes life-long emotional patterns, and makes us, in large part, who we are. Explaining how relationships function, how parents shape their child's developing self, how psychotherapy ... read more

"SO this book will have to be read again...so that I can actually absorb what I am reading. I am finding there are many words I need to look up, and many paragraphs that sometimes feel like a foreign language. BUT! The book is fascinating. It is right up my alley, and I am finding it is influencing my parenting at the moment, due to the fact that they reference mothers/babies a lot in relation to attachment theories and things of that nature. All you need is love...it's kind of true. (add in food and water, perhaps shelter)"
"It's fine, but perhaps my expectations for the book were something else entirely. Reading throughout it mostly felt like I was reading a book on how best to raise our children so they don't grow up to be jerks and ultimately we have a better, more loving society. That's fine and all but I sure don't have any kids.
Additionally, the writing just felt poor. Analogies were weird and it had this strange conservative vibe to it that I just couldn't deal with."
Basically this is a book about brains. It is not so much about love, it is about attachment theory. I learned how to raise babies, how to have relationships, I learned some people are hopeless.
They basically attack Freud for saying it all goes back to oedipus. But then they say it all goes back to parents and how they are attached to their parents. So basically Freud is completely wrong, except for the fact that he is a little bit right."
"I've read and underlined this book a couple of times. the book blurb says it well: An insightful look at the science of human emotions...a rare example of the fusing of scientific rigor with literary eloquence." It honors emotions like loneliness and why it hurts, why do relationships work as they do. It's about the brain and the memory. How love forms, how hearts heal, etc. It's about the chemistry of love. Not a light read but interesting."
