"I reread The Giver this summer and was again enthralled. I hadn't read this book since high school so to read it again now as a mother and a wife just gave the book a new perspective.
At the end of The Giver I saw a review of Gathering Blue as a companion book and I went to the library the next day and picked it up. I read the book in only a day or so but was very disappointed. There wasn't anything that made me love the main character, Kira, I instead instantly loved her close friend Matt, because of this I didn't really care what happened to Kira. My heart went out to Matt more and his plight and I wanted to know more about him and his past.
The twist at the end was predictable, the main character was boring and you didn't really care that the village was "mysterious" because you couldn't connect with anyone other than Matt, her loyal sidekick.
Perhaps read seperately as a book with no connection to The Giver this book may be enjoyable but as a companion...I just don't see it."
"Gathering Blue is an awesome book!! Without counting it´s marvelous author, Lois Lowry. This book is about a young, orphaned girl with a atwisted leg called Kira. Her father who was taken by beasts and her mother died of a horrible sickness, so the villagers burned down her cott because they didn´t want the sickness to spread. Kira´s mother had a wonderful mom. She worked with dyeing cloth for the singers robe which was a wonderful robe full of wonderful colors. Apart from her mother Kira and a four syllable woman who dies shortly after Katrina(Kiras Mother). After the tragic deathy, kira is taken by the elderly council to the council edfice and was to take the job which had been her mother´s, but she is not alone. Just a few steps from her room is the room who belongs to the carver called Thomas who also works with the singers staff. And after abouyt a year, Kira´s best friend, Matt(who is a tyke), goes missing. Kira grows worried more than ever. She and Thomas look for him all the time until the grand reunion comes. It is there after the first half of the song that they see Matt come into the edfice, And after the song, Matt tells them that he was in the lands long from there which he had brought from. He had brought a little piece of blue cloth!!(Kira´s dream was to make blue) and he also said that the big gift was ibn her room and when they got to the room there was a blind old man on kira´s bed. And after a long talk, Kira found out that the old man with no sight, was her father."
"When compared to the first Giver book, this one is disappointing. The idea is intriguing but it seems as though many vitally important details are left out. I get that the artists are forcibly orphaned and held against their will, made to "be" artistic...not really sure how it all "fits" with a society that kills all "un-perfect", non-contributing members. Also not sure why Kira's dad was attacked by "beasts" and left to die...it happened but I guess knowing why is not materially important to the rest of the plot. Kira's decision to stay behind, an artist-prisoner, also does not make any sense. It is clear that the artists will help shape the future as it is recorded in the song, staff and singer's robe, but why, when Kira's long, lost father comes for her does she choose as she does. Is she going to see her dad again? Is she going to get into trouble for meeting the new singer (especially since it is heavily hinted at that those who divulge or discover secrets are killed). It could've been a good book...but it seems to fizzle half-way through."
"Hundreds of years into the future, Earth of today no longer exists. Lois Lowry creates a whole new world where the color blue is lost, people are starving, and they rely on a song each to remember their past. Lois Lowry's Gathering Blue took an interesting take on what the future of earth might end up being.
Kira, a girl with only one usable leg, has just been orphaned when her mother died of an unknown illness. In Gathering Blue Kira relies on her skill of weaving and embroidery to survive. The plot of Gathering Blue has a few twists that will keep you turning the pages.
Like other Lois Lowry books, Gathering Blue is set in the future, on Earth, except the earth has gone in a different direction than most people believe. The people live in a village, and are ruled by a council. Every year the people gather to hear a song, sung by the singer, which tells of the downfall of earth and how this new village arose from the destruction. Kira, is selected to be the person who will take care of the robe, worn by the singer each year. The robe tells the story of earth and all the history of the people who now inhabit our planet. The robe is vibrant and beautiful, but...the color blue is completely absent. On top of everything, Kira is responsible to fill in the blank part of the robe with what the council tells her will be in the future.
The characters of Gathering Blue are somewhat static, we find out most all we know about Kira and the other characters usually in the first chapters where we meet them. Most of the story is focused more on plot than characterization.
Overall Gathering Blue was a good book, but not my favorite work of Lois Lowry. I would recommend this book to fans of Lois Lowry's books, but I would say that some of her other books are better."
