There may never have been a visual record of any military organization to rival it. From the North Pole to the jungles of South America, Wolff was given full access to the daily lives of the 850,000 men and women who comprise this combined fighting force -- a partnership that, as Secretary of the Navy John Dalton says in the foreword, is unique in its ability to deploy anywhere in the world. Supporting the remarkable photographs is the text by an author perfectly suited to the task -- retired Commander John Alexander, a 22-year Navy veteran with a background in journalism. Alexander offers both an overview and analysis of the myriad aspects of this complex military organization but also brings it to life through the words of the sailors and Marines themselves. In addition, the book provides the facts and figures on all the hardware that keeps this massive fighting machine in readiness, from aircraft carriers to LPD amphibious transports. Brian Wolff's photography has appeared in Newsweek, Time, Smithsonian, Life, Paris Match, Le Figaro, Stern, and many others. For this book, he broke through North Pole ice on an attack submarine, traveled to Alaska with Navy SEALS, deployed with Desert Storm forces in the Persian Gulf, launched from aircraft carriers, and went to sea in cruisers, battleships, and tugboats. John W. Alexander joined the Navy after receiving an MA in journalism from the University of Missouri. He served as Anti-submarine Warfare Officer on two destroyers and completed a tour as Navigator aboard theguided missile destroyer USS TATTNALL. He later traveled around the world as a Navy public affairs officer before retiring in 1992. He has written, directed and produced TV documentaries and authored two books and many articles on military topics.Hide synopsis
