"My book club decided to go back and read the book that launched Patterson's career. It's suspenseful and intriguing. A fantastic read that's great for discussion."
"Good book. This is the start of the Alex Cross series, chronicling the cases and mysteries of D.C. homicide detective and psychologist Alex Cross. This particular story is a very complex thriller/mystery. First the reader is introduced to Alex's feelings about the injustice of the D.C. police, as he is dragged from one case involving a murder of two prostitutes and a little boy to a public kidnapping case of two children of famous parents. This theme of injustice carries through the book as Cross continues to be furious that the ghetto murders are being pushed aside, the murderer running free, in favor of a hotshot kidnapping. But then the plot thickens and gets more complex, more people die, and the mastermind behind it all still runs free as he continues to escape, teasing those who pursue him and dare question his genius. This story is not only a murder mystery, it is a psychological thriller as the reader, and the characters, question a murderer's sanity and fight to keep the city safe from a criminal genius on a rampage. James Patterson comes up with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. I enjoyed reading this book, and I recommend it and other Patterson novels to fans of homicide mysteries and psychological thrills, and to those who like shows such as Law and Order. But I warn you, there are graphic and violent homicides that stem from the sick and twisted mind of a criminal maniac character. This deterred me from reading any more Alex Cross mysteries for the moment...I think I'll stick to the Women's Murder Club..."
"Well I this is my third patterson and it was just great again. I just the love the speed the stories develop. Ok it's not perfect by any means, some of the psychology is off beam and a little one dimensional at times but at the same time can be quite plausable. Same with the characters. However the overall result is superb. Plenty of genuine surprises, moments where you root for Alex and tight prose and dialogue with small chapters. If you like a page turner I suggest this. I am really looking forward to other books in the series and my fourth will be 1st to die of the WMC. Two series to dip in and out of at my leisure!! Opening up a lot of reading by a good author I can count on for a fast fun read. The film is rubbish by the way totally doesnt follow the book at all."
