They can't do it alone in fact if it weren't for this amazing lady Erin Gruwell nothing would have been possible.It all started when the teacher sees a classroom labeled "unteachable and at-risk".Erin Gruwell wants to make changes as her first year teaching high school so this was the best place for her, she makes it her goal to change the way students in her class view the world.The students in her class view the world as one big war zone and have their own goal which is to be able to survive the streets without being killed.Mrs.Gruwell takes it up on herself to show the kids the theirs more to life then gang violence trying to do so she risks losing her job and husband.She does alot for these kids she get two extra jobs jus so she can take her students on feild trips to see life changing people,and to fancy resturants to show the kids that theres is more to life them the grimy streets they live on.Through out the story you see how the kids treat her sometimes with no respect because they think that she'll do the same ting everyone else in their life has done which is lie to them.But you'll see that by not giving up on the students like they've already done on them selves you see how they grow on each other and become one big family and start to become cool friends with people outside of their race.
All in all I enjoyed this book because their were many touching diaries from these kids that made me just say "wow". It must have been hard for those kids to live esspecially because they even struggled to not get killed everyday. I have to say the best part about this book is that it is all true and it really happened.
I would recommened this book to people who wantt to learn more about the "getho" and how many people struggle to get through it. I would also recommend this book to teenagers because this was about how high school kids talked about their life and how they wanted to change. Great Book!"
"What an inspiring book! I learned a lot from these "at risk" students that grew up in an environment so different from the home and neighborhood I grew up in. I was reminded of how good I had it growing up with addiction-free parents who loved me and took care of me, a safe neighborhood to play in without racial tension and violence, and the gospel of Christ to give me guidance and hope. Some of the experiences that these kids endured and wrote about were hard just to read. I can't fathom, nor do I want to, actually living through them. Erin Gruwell made such a difference in the lives of these 150 troubled teens. She got to know them and let them know she cared even when no one else did. She shared with them a love for reading and got them to lay down their guns and stop taking drugs and write. Together they learned tolerance for each other: African Americans, Asians, Latinos, and Whites. She introduced them to their potential and showed them how to reach for their dreams.

"This is an interesting book, and given the fact that I want to believe it, I'm giving it three stars.
And yet...some things just don't add up.
The book is presented as a compilation of diary entries from 150 "at risk" high school students. The entries start in their Freshman year and in a way you can see these student's progression as "Freedom Writers." Yet, you're already midway through the book when the idea of keeping a diary is mentioned. How did all the earlier entries exist?
It's at this point that my suspension of disbelief evaporated. It became more and more apparent to me how edited these entries must have been: by the original authors, who must have made major retrospective revisions, and by fellow students, the book's editor, and possibly their teacher for grammatical corrections and probably decency.
The result, as many other reviewers have pointed out, is a compilation from what sounds like a single, bland voice.
In the end, it feels more like an alright story than an inspirational biography. The challenge to "toast for change" and be inspired by this story left me unmoved."
"In the movie the teacher gave each of students a notebook and they were allowed to write anything in it, and it was more like a diary to them. So in this book it shows what they wrote in there notebooks about their lives. Most of them talked about how their everyday lives are when they're in the streets just walking. No where is safe for them and they're always getting chased if they see people that is not their race they start running because those people will beat them up or even worse -- kill them. So in the book we get to read about what they have to deal with and why they can't get along with people that is not their race. I recommend this book to who are fans of the freedom writers. This book was great, and they really got my attention. These kids can inspire anybody who can relate to them and even if you can relate to them you can see how some kids our age have to go through so much problems in their teenage lives. Even though it's not the greatest life they can have they try to make the best out of it, in school and writing."
