About this title: In New Orleans before the Civil War, stature in society is directly related to one's skin shade--the lighter the better. Although he has been trained as a physician and studied in Paris, accomplished Creole musician and piano teacher Benjamin January is still looked upon as the son of a slave. So when a young octoroon--a woman only one-eighth black--is murdered, January, this free man of color, is the perfect scapegoat. Online feature.

"The time period was interesting as were some of the characters. I just didn't feel enough of a connection to the protagonist to want to read another."
"Set in New Orleans after the Battle of Chalmette, Hambly did a good job of exploring a rich city and its complex social system. I would compare Benjamin January with Jason Goodwin's Yashim character. Both have a unique perch just on the edge of society and provide the reader with a believable fly on the wall view of New Orleans (January) /Istanbul (Yashim). I am looking forward to the next "novel of suspense" in Hambly's Benjamin January series."
"This was very fun historical fiction as well as a mystery--detailed look (for a mass market bit of genre fiction) look at like in Creole New Orleans. Quite liked the main character."
