"Favorite author, so i love the sweetness of this book. About a lone boy who finds love and family in those who take him under their wings. Morals don't exist anymore like they did in this era.I like to be reminded that the world was not always so selfish."
"Gene STratton-Porter is a wonderful writer. Her stories have lasted through the years. This along with Girl of the Limberlost is another story of the "heroe's journey" and Freckles wins the fight. I think the "swamp angel" is much a Christ figure, carrying many of her pure qualities. I also love the gratitude for God's creations. I wouldn't say it's such a "tree hugger" book, because it teaches that man needs the trees, but it teaches a great respect for the purpose of nature. I highly recommend this book. It is a great living book to read for anyone studying botany or zoology."
"I really enjoy the tales of Gene Stratton Porter. I enjoyed A Girl of the Limberlost more than Freckles and would recommend it to a first-time Porter reader. The book is located in the classic section of our library. Location and the cover cause this to be a book that is rarely checked out by junior high students. It deserves to be placed in a more visible location and should be recommended by the librarian. I love the descriptions of nature. Porter makes you feel like you are really there. She had a wonderful grasp of the English language and her writing, though completed before 1924, demonstrated many of the techniques that we encourage our students to use in their writing today."
